Black Girl invisibility Measurement development

The Black Girl Invisibility Scale (BGIS) determines the frequency that Black girls feel invisible in high school, which was developed from a series of studies.

the BGIS Derived from three studies:

Study 1: Grounded Theory Study

A grounded theory study focusing on Black girls' invisibility interviewed 14 participants in high school. Items were derived from the analysis and findings to support the development of the BGIS.

Study 2: Black Girl Focus Groups

Two community-centered focus groups of 6 Black girls total were conducted where participants provided input on the initial selection of BGIS items.

Study 3: Survey

A survey collected data from 220 Black girls, leading to an exploratory factor analysis that used 11 items to sequentially estimate factor solutions.

Factor Analysis

Utilizing data from the three studies, the resulting BGI scale was then examined in a factor analysis with the Black Girl Gendered Racism Scale (BGGRS). 8 items were created and correlated with anxiety and depression scales.
